Nicole Atkins returns for full European tour in April 2019

18-12-2018

The Jersey-bred, Nashville-based theatrical pop singer-songwriter Nicole Atkins devotes much of her fourth album Goodnight Rhonda Lee to emotional excavation without ever assuming the subdued posture people might expect from a work of disclosure. In the press materials accompanying the album, she wastes no time establishing that the 11-song set depicts high-stakes personal struggles. Only Atkins doesn't treat getting sober and navigating major life transitions, like getting married and moving 900 miles away, as a somber affair.

To borrow a phrase from heaven's new poet laureate, Leonard Cohen, Nicole Atkins was "born with the gift of a golden voice." But somewhere along the way she misplaced it. Goodnight Rhonda Lee is the story of Nicole finding her voice, and how, in doing so, she went a little crazy.

This quote a reviewer wrote after a performance on the recent sold out UK tour with Mercury Rev is really spot on: "Nicole Atkins is the girl from Neptune City. She is singing in a fabulous wig and now the power has just gone off. Half way through ‘A Little Crazy’, the opening track from her last album Goodnight Rhonda Lee and a song that she co-wrote with fellow American Chris Isaak, her guitar and vocal amplification cuts right out. But without missing a single beat, she just steps out from behind the microphone, goes to the lip of the stage, and belts out the rest of the song totally unplugged. It undoubtedly helps her having a voice bigger than New Jersey. It is a magnificent beast in truth, a huge soulful instrument that completely fills her songs with bristling energy and no end of divine passion. It really is a wonder to behold."

Just back from her UK December dates she now announces a full European tour this next April. We're already looking forward!
