The mysterious disappearance of Hezekiah Procter: the eternal life of a fictitious country singer

Canadian singer-songwriter Andrew McClelland, aka Li'l Andy, is making waves with a very special project. He has adopted the alter ego of Hezekiah Procter, a musician who between 1925 and 1930 left a very emphatic mark on the development of the earliest country, blues, jazz and gospel. However, at the end of the 1920s the man suddenly disappeared from the scene and, apart from a mysterious postcard, he was never heard from again.

McClelland wrote a book about the fictional life of this country pioneer and together with a number of musician friends, he recorded 27 songs on a double LP that together his complete oeuvre. Recorded in style, with analogue equipment from the thirties. So that you would swear you were listening to original old time country from 90 years ago. The Complete Recordings Of Hezekiah Procter are performed live just as stylishly and authentically. As if the clock has been turned back almost a century.

The entire project was put together by McClelland with great expertise. The book cleverly interweaves fictional and historical facts. For example, Hezekiah was also present when producer Ralph Peer arrived in Bristol, Tennessee, in 1927 to record Jimmie Rodgers and the Carter Family with his 'Talking Machine'. These legendary sessions are widely regarded as the birth of country music. And Hezekiah Procter was there. The great strike of textile workers in Gastonia, North Carolina, which Procter became involved in in 1929, is also based on historical facts.
